  • Highlights:  Lots and lots of quiet roads, with some pretty farms and trees and fields -- (a combination of gentler, quieter, and closer than most similar routes).

  • Characteristics:  Gentle hills on a straightforward route.  Less traffic interaction than is typical for routes on this website.  

Hill climbs:  Total vertical climb around 400-450 feet.  All climbs under 75 ft, and all sustained grades under 2%.  

Traffic:  About 0.1 mile of high-speed and/or high-volume motor vehicle traffic, and about 1 mile of moderate traffic.

  • Directions to Start -- Tivoli, NY.

From the Taconic State Parkway:  Take exit in northern Dutchess county for Route 199 West.  Go West on this about 9 miles, passing through the village of Red Hook.  Turn Right on Route 9G and go North about about 4 miles.  Turn Left on Dutchess County Route 78 and go West 0.5 mile into the village of Tivoli. 

From the New York Thruway:  Take exit 19 for Kingston.  Follow signs to Route 209 North.  This curves East and crosses the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge across the Hudson River, and becomes Route 199.  Turn Left on Route 9G and go go North about about 4 miles.  Turn Left on Dutchess County Route 78 and go West 0.5 mile into the village of Tivoli.

From the south on Route 9:  Taking Route 9 North, about 2 miles after passing through Rhinebeck, turn Left onto Route 9G and go North about 7 miles.  Turn Left on Dutchess County Route 78 and go West 0.5 mile into the village of Tivoli.  

From the Rip Van Winkle Bridge:  Go south on Route 9G about 7 miles to Germantown.  If you don't want to start the route there, continue South about 5.5 miles on Route 9G.  Turn Right on Dutchess County Route 78 and go West 0.5 mile into the village of Tivoli. 

From the north on other roads:  Simplest is to go to Route 9G somewhere near the Rip Van Winkle Bridge or city of Hudson, and follow the directions above from the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. 

Other start points:  Germantown, Clermont State Park.
