Routes for bicycling -- Other Peoples

Since we do not ride much in Bergen County ourselves, we'll start with some links to some routes by other people who are here more often:

Routes for bicycling -- Ours

  • George Washington Bridge to Piermont -- 30 miles round trip, moderate.  Start with the GWB, go up the West side of the river through New Jersey into New York to a food stop down by the Hudson River.  See lots of fellow cyclists, enjoy cruising the long rolling grades of Route 9W.  1400 vertical feet, hill index 3.2.  Start points Manhattan, Fort Lee NJ, Piermont NY. [ Description | Maps + GPS ]

  • GWB and River Road to Nyack -- 44 miles, hilly.  The most popular ride from Manhattan.  Start at the George Washington Bridge, go up the West side of the river through New Jersey into New York.  Views of the Hudson River, lots of fellow cyclists, cruising the long rolling grades of Route 9W.  2300 vertical feet, hill index 5.0.  Start points Manhattan and Fort Lee NJ, also Piermont and Nyack NY. [ Description | Maps + GPS ]

River Routes -- Bridge to Bridge

Bergen County has a famous bridge across the Hudson River -- the George Washington -- and it's a special thing to ride across it.  You can also combine it with another bridge, to make a loop route where you ride on both sides of the river, and across both bridges.  The first route below crosses the GWB and the Bayonne Bridge, and visits a third:  the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

  • New York Harbor Circle -- 43 miles or 50 miles, mostly flat or gentle.  A tourism adventure circling around New York harbor -- not a "route" like the others on this website.  Excellent views of the Manhattan skyline from many angles, and lots of pretty views of big expanses of water.  Visits to a variety of New York and New Jersey neighborhoods.  Elegant modern spaces, great bridges, and striking historic architecture.  Start points:  Manhattan, Fort Lee NJ, Hoboken NJ, Liberty State Park NJ. [ Description | Maps + GPS | Photos ]

  • GWB to Bear Mountain Bridge Loop, on both sides of the Hudson river -- 92 miles (or 83 miles), hilly.  A great accomplishment, several pretty views of the River, and a great variety of riding.  Lots of motor vehicle traffic, requiring advanced traffic-handling skills.  At least two sections on dirt.  7200 vertical feet, hill index over 5.0. [ Description | Map | Photos ]

Gentler Places, mostly off road

  • Saddle River path -- Saddle River County Park in Bergen County NJ has a beautiful paved path that runs along the Saddle River for about six miles north-south from the Ridgewood Duck Pond (just south of Linwood Av and north of Ridgewood Av, and just west of Paramus Rd) thru Dunkerhook to Railroad Av in Rochelle Park (between Saddle River Rd and Main St - Fairview Av), with several side paths [as of June 2004].  Near Rochelle Park, Glen Rock, Dunkerhook, Ridgewood, Paramus, Fair Lawn.  For info try Garden Skaters, Bergen County Parks.

Transportation

Taxi

Calling a taxi services can be very helpful for bicycling:

  • when your bicycle gets messed up bad enough so you cannot ride it -- or weather turns real bad -- and you still need to get home or back to your car.
  • to get to and from train stations.
  • to set up one-way tours.

It's usually easier to call a taxi if you have some phone numbers of taxi services in the area you're riding. A way to get a list is to do a search for "taxi" on a directory of business phone numbers such as Superpages.com -- Here's some towns and cities in this county on which might be helpful to search:

Teaneck, Maywood, Hackensack, Hillsdale, Fort Lee, Edgewater, Cliffside Park

Here's some taxi services we found in phone directories around 2003:

  • Discount Taxi, Teaneck, NJ
  • ACA Taxi & Cab, Maywood, NJ
  • Garden State Limousine, Hackensack, NJ
  • Claire Transport, Hillsdale, NJ
  • Teaneck Car & Limousine
  • A-1 Car Services, Fort Lee, NJ
  • Skyline Taxi, Edgewater, NJ
  • Scotty's Taxi, Cliffside Park NJ
